Three weeks before its Feb. Market research helped convinced Hallstrom and the producers that it was the better choice, and the new scenes were added at the last minute. John decides to do this after realizing that if a man is selfless enough to let the love of his love go to another man, than he is worth living. John does not regret ever loving Savannah. The Epilogue ends while John is watching Savannah. He sees her staring at the full moon, proving her unending love for John.

When he hints that he might, Savannah is saddened, and the two have an argument. On one of his missions, whilst saving a fellow soldier, John is shot twice. After recovering in a hospital in Germany, he once again enlists in the army but is eventually posted back in the United States, where his father soon passes away after suffering a stroke. He then looks up Savannah and finds that the horse therapy farm she always dreamed of opening failed after a year.
It is also revealed that the man she ended up marrying was Tim, who was subsequently diagnosed with cancer and had precious little time to live. The film ends with John back in the US, where he chances upon Savannah in a coffee shop.
The two wordlessly hug, and the story closes. Yes it was terrible what Savannah did to John and I thought she loved her truly until of course she marries Tim, Poor guy John. The book ended on sad notes with both the main characters oddly dying for the love of their lives. May 16, AM. I thought the ending was perfect!! It was selfless and amazing!! I definately wasn't thinking that it would end up that way, but I'm glad it did I just wish the movie would have followed the book.. I know Its not your typical love story normally it ends with the couple getting married or something but this was actually pretty amazing.
Yes, it was : The ending made me mad at Savannah but other than that I loved it!!! May 16, PM. It was perfect. No other way would have fit right. I get why the author would make that the ending, but I wish he got to be with her. Savannah and him were perfect, but I get where Nicholas Sparks was coming from when he chose that for the ending May 18, AM. I actually preferred the book's ending to the movie's ending. I always thought Savannah was selfish and if she truly loved John, she would've waited for him.
The end of the book proves what a great man John was. I think Savannah made a choice she had to live with. The movie basically let Savannah off the hook to have it both ways. For once, I was glad when the guy didn't get the girl. I picture him moving forward in life and finding the perfect partner for him.

I think I read too many happy endings and that this sad ending made the story that much more enjoyable for me to read.
