We visited Vienna in June and are re-visiting in December. Have been drinking hotel tap water here in Vienna since Sunday. It tastes fine and no funny tummy either! I too come from a country where drinking tap water is unsafe; however, no problem in Austria , it is perfectly safe! The water in Vienna is generally soft, which tastes better than hard water which is why London's water, although perfectly safe, doesn't taste that great.
Nothing to worry about though, it's all about the amount of mineral absorbed from the soil. When people buy bottled water, then carbonated one because some beverages just taste better with it. Ever tried a glass of white wine with tap water?
