That message seemed to be a signal for the couple in the middle of the car, who had just found their seats, to begin an animated conversation in loud tones. The gentleman was plotting out all sorts of business strategy and the woman expressed opinions on everything he said in a voice that echoed through the car.
The woman whispered something to the man and then he answered back in a low but clearly audible voice. As the train drew within 10 miles of Philadelphia, they had resumed the intensity of their dialogue. You should be sitting in one of the regular cars instead of driving everyone here crazy. A few minutes later, he came back and led his whispering partner to another car, muttering something about people being pretty rude and selfish.
And where the silent masses, cowed by fear or shyness, allow the loudmouths to blab away unchecked. Not in the Quiet Car. People are polite and respectful. Someone got up to cough in the passage. The Quiet Car debuted in , during a time when customers were seeking a respite from those increasingly ubiquitous cell phones. Even Hardison has been on the wrong end of Quiet Car justice.

She was eventually removed from the train by police. Definitely a sad day in Quiet Car history. As a proud member of the Quiet Car nation, I will admit that we may be overzealous in our efforts to preserve, protect and defend it. Here we can sit with like-minded people, enjoy our silent utopia, and just… be. So let us celebrate the Quiet Car: the last bastion of civilized travel. Let us cherish it. Let us protect it. Let us sing its praises….
